Mentors Needed For Story and Boone County Students
Become a mentor to a local child this fall through YSS School-Based Mentoring! Mentoring takes place at the child’s school for one hour a week, typically over the lunch hour, and provides K-8th grade youth in Boone and Story Counties with consistent adults who they can rely on and learn from. A mentor provides knowledge, makes recommendations, and challenges a child to develop to his or her full potential. Mentoring matches may play board games, talk, work on art or STEM projects, set goals, read together, plan for the future, and ultimately build a friendship.
According to research by the National Mentoring Partnership, nine million kids in America make everyday choices that lead up to life's big decisions without enough guidance and support - the kind most of us count on. The YSS School-Based Mentoring program helps create relationships across generations and other divides which lead not only to improved outcomes for students, but also a stronger community.
